What’s Behind the Seminar Series

I am doing this because I have been looking for remote work for the past 6 months and not finding anything. Because, looking at the situation, it was time to see what I had learned.

I learned that the plan was not working.

Work is not what it was. Not so long ago, you could apply for a job, be interviewed, and be assessed as a potential good fit. You may need a little training; you might have a rough edge or two; and you might come from a different sector altogether.

But it did not matter much because employers were ready to train you, to integrate you into their company culture, and to transfer your skills from automaking to SaaS, from baking to teaching.

In other words, humans made the decisions, not algorithms.

Today employers are looking for an exact match. They want to hire someone who is plug-and-play and no batteries required. This is not a complaint (although it could become one if left unchecked!) it is a statement of fact.

To be hired in 2025 and beyond, you must present yourself with a completely integrable profile, ticking all the boxes, and answering YES to all of the must-haves – no matter how unusually specific they seem.

It takes them longer to hire the right person, but for them it is no muss no fuss. Monday’s empty chair is suddenly filled on Tuesday with the EXACT person needed.

One day, I have faith, the exact combination experience, knowledge, skills, and fast-food preferences will come up for me, and I will be engaged on the spot.

In the meantime, the question is how to operate and attract attention under the assumption that we will not slot snugly into the highly specific positions being offered. How?

The answer is that the question is wrong. As job seekers, we cannot change the parameters being required any more than we can lie about our abilities. If you say that you know coding languages, someone will eventually ask you to give them a FizzBuzz implementation in Python, C++, and Java. And make it snappy.
